Nature's Threads

Thinking about a new body of work, I was drawn back to nature as an interesting contrast to my cityscapes. I went for a series of unstructured and unplanned excursions with my camera, and through the camera lense I discovered a fascination with the unexpected. I was drawn to the shapes and forms as well as the colour and line, perhaps due to my background in ceramic sculpture.

When I examined the images I’d taken, I discovered that the marks and movement I found began to remind me of spontaneous gestures and strokes from my painting practice. This began a process of interplay and exchange between the mark-making in my painting process, and the structures and shapes in the photos, with each inspiring the other as I went back to take more photos.

I enjoy abstracting from the photographic imagery, taking the literal twigs, trees and undergrowth and proliferating and layering them further, in compositions that celebrate frenzied energy and flow.
